Transforming couples counseling
Drs. John and Julie Gottman have spent decades studying couples and developing proven methods to overcome relationship issues and also focus on strengths. Besides being highly effective, this counseling is more collaborative and builds hope for a healthier future. I am Level 3 trained https://gottmanreferralnetwork.com/therapists/kelly-weber in Gottman Method couples therapy and believe in it wholeheartedly.
The approach
The first 2-3 hours are assessment and treatment planning; meaning that I get to know you as a couple and individually. This involves getting your stories/history and some online assessments for each partner to fill out. Then we get together and review the results to discuss the relationship’s strengths and challenges to put together a treatment plan (i.e what we will work on) and how to measure the progress. Some couples find doing these initial steps in an intensive 3-4 hour session optimal before reverting to an every other week pace, which I agree.
The length of couples therapy varies by couple and what is going on in the relationship. The ultimate goal of couples therapy using Gottman principles is that the couple learns skills so that they eventually won’t need the therapist long term and can transition into periodic check-ins for maintenance.
